James, age 11, learning the violin, from Hillingdon Music Service

Since becoming a Mayor’s Music Scholar in 2012 James has made outstanding progress on the violin. Now at Grade 7, James plays as part of an ensemble and as a soloist at musical events for his borough and school. He has played unaccompanied solos at high profile events at City Hall and the Mansion House, performing from memory and with a stage presence beyond his years. Earlier this year James was youngest winner of the local heat of the Rotary Young Musician of the Year and was one of four winners of a London Music Award which he collected at a glittering evening at the Roundhouse in June.

As well as giving him a wealth of musical opportunities, James’s Scholarship has also given him more confidence amongst his peers and within community, so much so that he now plays his violin in order to raise money for local charities and to entertain the elderly.

We applaud James’s passion for music, and the way in which he uses his talent to support others. Well done James.
