Alexya, aged 11, learning the trumpet, from Barking & Dagenham Community Music Service
Alexya was awarded a Mayor’s Music Scholarship in 2013 having been playing the trumpet for one year. Her teacher told us that she made ‘the most amazing trumpet sound I’ve heard in a whole class instrumental teaching group for quite a while’, which is why she was nominated for a scholarship.
Alexya did not speak any English when she first started school but she worked hard and diligently to catch up. Though we are told she could be quite shy in class, her ability to play an instrument has apparently increased her self-confidence enormously. She has taught herself to play many songs, and gave an outstanding solo performance of “Eastenders” at the end of year 5, which she learnt by ear with no help from her tutors.
Her mother tells us she is amazedby her daughter’s talent because no one else in the family is musical at all, while her tutors say she is a delight to teach. We are delighted to hear it!
